The A, A, G, and Gs along with the A and the A (or the J version) are possibly some of my favorite Singer machines.

I did a motor repair , which failed and the machine is now treadle only. That one has had a long, hard life, but is very free running and still precise in the way it sews. My second had been in a cabinet and was hardly used. It operates effectively as a brand new machine. I was offered an unrestored Singer by my local sewing shop in Southampton.

I bought it — mainly as I was feeling guilty having been given lots of very good advice there about machines, but only ever paid pennies for small items like thread. I bought the with the intention of stripping it for spares — mainly the motor which would go in the poorly When I got the machine home and cleaned it up though, it was obvious the machine had been lightly used and the rest of the machine had not a mark on it.

I think whoever owned it must have regularly opened the cabinet and cleaned the machine from the top, without getting the machine up to its working position. Over time that wore the paint away on the back of it.

To avoid huge delays in part shipments I had previously suspend the ability to order hard parts until our flight schedules are stable again. With that said, I am now allowing parts sales to resume, but please do keep in mind that items will not leave our Post Office until Friday’s.

I’ve had one of these since and have sewn hundreds and hundreds of items on it. It’s a real workhorse. The only thing it’s not great on is slippery knits so I pull out my little basic Brother machine for those. I trust the grandaughter will enjoy using it. This is one of my favorite Singer machines. The other one I love is the , which only stitches a straight stitch.

The letters before a serial number refer to the production plant location. Replacement parts often have serial numbers or patent numbers embossed or stamped somewhere, as well. If your machine is missing the serial number, contact Singer Consumer Affairs for assistance in determining its age.

These machines are all fundamentally the same with some small differences. The A and the A are the same machine but with cosmetic updates on the A. The same is true of the A and the A or as in the case of the I have here — the J. The same machine but for the cosmetic differences. This means that it does stitches without the use of fashion cams. The A and the A both need cams to stitch out anything other than a straight stitch. That being said, with a little care you should never have to worry about a cam stack and its various linkages gumming up, so the machines with the built-in cam stacks are excellent machines to grab if you find them for sale.
